Flying in Poland — a VFR pilot's guide

Poland opens up surprisingly quickly from the air. The Baltic coast between Gdańsk and Szczecin — wide beaches and pine forest — is visible for 100 nm on a clear day. The Masurian Lakes in the northeast, 2,000 lakes in a mosaic from 3,000 ft, are one of central Europe's hidden VFR treasures. The Tatras at the Slovak border are compact but proper Alpine terrain. Warsaw is large but has a dedicated GA aerodrome at Babice that avoids the Chopin TMA entirely.

Airspace

Polish airspace is predominantly Class E below FL195 outside the major TMAs. The main restriction is a band of military D-areas running roughly east-west through central Poland; most activate on a published schedule.

Radio & FIS

PANSA provides both ATC and FIS; English is standard at all controlled positions. For VFR in Class E, Warsaw Information provides an advisory service across a very large area. Polish informality on frequency once the formal initial call is done; squawk 7000 unless assigned.

Planning

FPL required cross-border (SERA.4001, 60 min). Domestic VFR unrestricted below FL095 outside controlled airspace; PANSA online pre-flight briefing at pansa.pl. PPR varies — Babice (EPBC, Warsaw) requires it; smaller eastern strips often do not.

Fuel

AVGAS 100LL at major fields; self-service is less common than in western Europe — a fuel attendant is usual. Mielec (EPMB) and Babice (EPBC) are reliable AVGAS points.
