Spain rewards the pilot who plans. The Meseta plateau at 3,500 ft offers 100 nm visibility and almost no traffic; the Costa Brava from the air is one of those views that justifies the PPL; the Pyrenees from the south are more dramatic than from the French side. The Canary Islands are a serious undertaking and one of the most spectacular GA trips available from Europe. The main friction is the AENA handling monopoly — understanding it before arrival saves money and frustration.

Airspace

Below FL195 Spain is predominantly Class E for VFR. The main constraints are Class C around Madrid (Barajas TMA is large) and Barcelona (El Prat TMA). Military zones — LET, LEA designations — are extensive in central Spain and along the Mediterranean coast. The Canary Islands fall under GCCC FIR, separate from mainland Madrid FIR; over-water planning rules apply for island legs.

!AENA operates 46 Spanish airports and mandates AENA-approved ground handling — independent handling is not permitted. A single C172 stop at a major AENA airport runs €100–200+. Budget airports (Reus, Almería, Jerez) are lower, but never free.
iWing cones (conos de ala) and wheel chocks (calzos) are required at AENA airports; only AENA-approved types are accepted. ENAIRE (the ANSP, FIS and ATC) operates separately from AENA — a dispute with AENA handling does not affect your ENAIRE clearance.

Radio & FIS

ENAIRE FIS covers Spain in four sectors: Madrid, Barcelona, Canarias and Sevilla. English is standard; controllers will repeat back at pace if you miss something. E.g. Madrid Control, EC-BCD, Toledo, 4500 feet, VFR, Sabadell LELL, request FIS.

Planning

FPL required for all cross-border flights (60 min minimum, SERA.4001). PPR is required at many AENA airports for GA; non-AENA fields (Cuatro Vientos, Sabadell, some regional strips) are more straightforward. High season (July–August) at popular coastal strips requires prior booking.

Fuel

AVGAS 100LL at all AENA airports and most larger GA fields; the Repsol card works at many self-service points. Smaller Canary Island strips: confirm fuel by phone before departure — AVGAS is not universal on all islands.
