The Netherlands is compact, flat and fascinating from the air. The tulip fields in season from 1,500 ft are extraordinary — a patchwork of colour for miles; the Zeeland delta offers coast-and-water scenery with no mountains to complicate the weather; Amsterdam from the air is arresting. The operational challenge is the Schiphol TMA, one of Europe's most complex for GA — but Lelystad to the east is purpose-built for GA and avoids it entirely.
Airspace
The Class A floor is FL095 — one of the lowest in Europe. Many continental altitudes you would consider normal VFR cruise put you in Class A here; plan routes carefully. Lelystad (EHLE) sits just east of the Schiphol TMA and is accessible without entering Class C.
Radio & FIS
Dutch controllers speak excellent English and are methodical; Amsterdam Information covers most of the country for FIS. Expect precise altitude readbacks; squawk 7000 or the assigned code.
Planning
FPL required cross-border. Domestic VFR is unrestricted below FL095 outside controlled airspace — no Sunday or lunch restrictions common here. Lelystad (EHLE) is the recommended base for GA visitors: full facilities, AVGAS, Jet-A, good handling at reasonable prices. Texel (EHTX) is one of the best destination aerodromes in the country — a Frisian island with a short grass strip and a ferry to the village.
